Winning Solution With Front Load Washer Dryer
If you are living in a place with limited space for laundry then a combination of washer and dryer may be a better solution than getting two separate machines. At first glance this seems to be a great solution for everyone else too, however, you do need to consider other issues.
Having two functions performed in one space usually carries a price. In the case of washer/dryer machine, most people find that dryers are not as good as the stand alone ones. Of course many others disagree, as the comfort of having it all in one place and not having to transfer your washing from one machine to another can be a useful bonus. The front load washer dryers come in two general types – as a single unit that looks like a washing machine, or as front load washer dryers, where the dryer is stacked on top of the washing machine.
The systems can be vented or non-vented and the dryer can be electric or gas. Gas dryers tend to be more expensive, although over time they tend to offer a saving. As these combination systems are meant for small spaces, most are non-vented. That means that the drying times tend to be longer than in stand-alone vented dryers. If you opt for a single unit (the washing remains in the same space for drying), then there are further considerations you need to be aware of. The amount of washing you can fit can be larger than the amount that can be dried after washing.
So you may need to take things out and interrupt the process. As the dryer starts up with a wet drum, it takes longer to dry the same amount of washing than in a separate dryer. Condensation dryers, which are non-vented, take longer to dry because of the process used. None of these considerations are an issue as long as you are aware of them and are prepared to accept them. Front load washer dryers seem to be very popular in Europe where there are more people living in small apartments and space is at a premium.
Moreover, front loaders have been popular in Europe for a long time as without the agitator in the middle they are less damaging to your washing and even very delicate items can be washed safely. Other than the above, you simply need to consider your usual washing machine needs. The choice of front load washer dryers is lesser than if you were to get stand-alone units. That means that you need to look at the features offered very carefully. Number of different programs, spinning speeds, delicate cycles, anti-wrinkle feature, and others may or may not be available in the combination model even if they are available in a similar stand-alone washer.
Despite higher energy consumption by the dryer (especially non-vented) there are combination units on the market that qualify for the Energy Star rating. The more energy efficient the unit, the higher its purchase price. And as is usually the case – better quality construction and better performance also increase the price tag.
